Paper: Minimum 4 pages typed - MLA/APA format + minimum 2 independent resources
+ Presentation to class.
You may work with a partner, or you may choose to do this project yourself.
DRAMA ~ The Gettysburg Address: Give an historical background, memorize this famous speech, dress up, recite it (live not video) dramatically, and provide a nice background on the screen as you do. Your analysis paper should consist of an historical report generated from two .EDU or .ORG or .GOV resources as well as an analysis of the Gettysburg Address relative to the rhetorical techniques Lincoln used.
ART INTERPRETATION ~ Emily Dickinson: Select one of Dickinson's poems and interpret it in some form of art, whether it be a painting, drawing, poster, etc. Whichever form you choose, be sure that it is meticulous and detailed, with an amount of creativity and effort worthy of an advanced student. Your paper should consist of your analysis of this poem, an independent resource's analysis of this poem, a second independent resource's analysis of Emily Dickinson's writing in general, as well as an interpretation of your own art work as it relates to the poem you chose.
CREATIVE WRITING ~ Walt Whitman: After reading at least 10 of Walt Whitman's poems, and researching his Leaves of Grass book which was self-published, write and create your own poem chapbook of 10 poems inspired by Whitman's poems. Your chapbook should have a title/cover page with picture, as well as an "Acknowledgments" page giving thanks to Mr. Whitman for his inspiration and explaining how his poetry inspired you. Each of your poems should have a copy of Whitman's poem you are emulating or were inspired by and a detailed reason why your poem was inspired. You poems MUST be a minimum of 20 lines each. Your independent sources (typed on MLA Works Cited page) will be where you found Whitman's poems.
CARTOGRAPHY: 1850-1890 ~ Create a combination North American Map + Timeline on a large poster that displays spots for LITERARY events, authors/writings, historical events, and Civil War divisions and battles extending through the years 1850 to 1890. Be sure to include a "KEY", make the map colorful, and unless you have extremely neat handwriting and exceptional drawing capabilities, use a computer to print out all text and relevant pictures. Your map should contain at least 20 major reference and notable points/areas relevant to the time period. Your paper should be in chronological order and describe in detail the areas noted on the map and your thought process behind creating it. Be sure to use at least two independent sources that are .EDU, .ORG, OR .GOV.
INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING ~ Ambrose Bierce: This original Civil War author, front line reporter, and ghost stories author led a fascinating life. His death was even more mysterious. In the style of an investigative reporter / CSI / television show, video tape a program that gives a biography of the interesting Mr. Bierce as well as possible speculations into his death. See http://www.biography.com/people/groups/mysterious-deaths for examples on how to prepare/format your video. Your paper should be a transcript of your video and contain an MLA Works Cited page indicating the factual information you obtained from at least two independent sources.

INDEPENDENT READING / LITERARY ANALYSIS & PRESENTATION INFORMATION

Paper: Minimum 4 pages typed - MLA/APA format + minimum 2 independent resources
+ Presentation to class.
You may work with a partner, or you may choose to do this project yourself.
DRAMA ~ The Gettysburg Address: Give an historical background, memorize this famous speech, dress up, recite it (live not video) dramatically, and provide a nice background on the screen as you do. Your analysis paper should consist of an historical report generated from two .EDU or .ORG or .GOV resources as well as an analysis of the Gettysburg Address relative to the rhetorical techniques Lincoln used.
ART INTERPRETATION ~ Emily Dickinson: Select one of Dickinson's poems and interpret it in some form of art, whether it be a painting, drawing, poster, etc. Whichever form you choose, be sure that it is meticulous and detailed, with an amount of creativity and effort worthy of an advanced student. Your paper should consist of your analysis of this poem, an independent resource's analysis of this poem, a second independent resource's analysis of Emily Dickinson's writing in general, as well as an interpretation of your own art work as it relates to the poem you chose.
CREATIVE WRITING ~ Walt Whitman: After reading at least 10 of Walt Whitman's poems, and researching his Leaves of Grass book which was self-published, write and create your own poem chapbook of 10 poems inspired by Whitman's poems. Your chapbook should have a title/cover page with picture, as well as an "Acknowledgments" page giving thanks to Mr. Whitman for his inspiration and explaining how his poetry inspired you. Each of your poems should have a copy of Whitman's poem you are emulating or were inspired by and a detailed reason why your poem was inspired. You poems MUST be a minimum of 20 lines each. Your independent sources (typed on MLA Works Cited page) will be where you found Whitman's poems.
CARTOGRAPHY: 1850-1890 ~ Create a combination North American Map + Timeline on a large poster that displays spots for LITERARY events, authors/writings, historical events, and Civil War divisions and battles extending through the years 1850 to 1890. Be sure to include a "KEY", make the map colorful, and unless you have extremely neat handwriting and exceptional drawing capabilities, use a computer to print out all text and relevant pictures. Your map should contain at least 20 major reference and notable points/areas relevant to the time period. Your paper should be in chronological order and describe in detail the areas noted on the map and your thought process behind creating it. Be sure to use at least two independent sources that are .EDU, .ORG, OR .GOV.
INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING ~ Ambrose Bierce: This original Civil War author, front line reporter, and ghost stories author led a fascinating life. His death was even more mysterious. In the style of an investigative reporter / CSI / television show, video tape a program that gives a biography of the interesting Mr. Bierce as well as possible speculations into his death. See http://www.biography.com/people/groups/mysterious-deaths for examples on how to prepare/format your video. Your paper should be a transcript of your video and contain an MLA Works Cited page indicating the factual information you obtained from at least two independent sources.
